Niche blogging is a great way to build a blog quickly and efficiently. There are problems that can arise from this approach, but can be taken care of with slow and methodical outward growth. It is important to pick a topic that interests you, and a topic you will feel comfortable talking about on a consistent basis over a long stretch of time. If you are able to pull together a bunch of unique and interesting content about your niche, you will start to see a tremendous growth that enables you to expand into broader subjects.
The Benefits of a Niche
Building a large blog with a broad scope takes a significant amount of time. When you reach into a lot of subjects you are scattering your audience and will have a hard time gathering hardcore readership. If I loved Palm Trees, I would want to go to a blog that talks about Palm Trees. I am less likely to go and stay at a blog that talks about all trees. This is the gift and the curse of the niche. Yes, you are going to gain all of the Palm Tree loving audience, but you will lose all of the Pine Tree loving audience! In the short term, building a niche blog is a quick way to gain a small hardcore group of readers, but it will be important to know when to start to branch out, and even more important to not alienate your current readership.
Interest
It is very important you have some kind of experience or prior knowledge in your niche. You shouldn’t write about gardening if you’ve never had your hands in the soil. A constant thirst for knowledge, and a few years of experience in the subject will fulfill this requirement. You may have an interest in the niche, but do you really enjoy the niche? If you don’t have a genuine like for what you are talking about, you are going to find it very difficult to keep writing about the subject on a daily or bi-daily basis.
Picking a Niche
Do you love it? Do you enjoy it? Are you knowledgeable in the subject? Will people be interested in what you have to say?
These are questions you should be asking yourself before you pick a topic. It is equally important to ask yourself whether or not you’ll have enough to write about over a long stretch of time. Can you think of 10 topics you’d write about right off the top of your head? If not, you are going to be hard pressed to make it more then a month or two. Building a niche may be a short term solution to building a blog, but you always have to think about the long term!
Always Come Home
The great thing about a niche is that you can always go back to that topic. When your blog is becoming problematic or hard to write for, then you can always go home to your niche. If you are able to successfully create a blog that passes your niche, you will always have a place to call home when times get tough.
